What is forward head posture? And is it harmful?

Share this

Forward head posture is one of the most common posture problems. People with this posture display a more rounded upper back (hyperkyphosis), often have a straightening of the cervical spine on imaging (reduction of the natural lordotic curve), and an anterior displacement of the head relative to its neutral position along the longitudinal axis (head shifts forward from shoulders).

It is often accompanied by other poor postural habits such as slouching, rounded shoulders, and a protruding stomach. When these problems combine, they can lead to serious health issues such as herniated or bulging discs in the neck, shoulder, and upper back regions.

Cause

It is believed by many to be caused by too many hours spent with a computer, phone, or other devices in front of the head. Another factor related to the time spent in these positions is that a sedentary lifestyle leads to a decrease in the stimulation of the posture control centers in the brain. As our posture changes so do the biomechanics of our body. This leads to dysfunctions of the joints, abnormal tension in the myofascia, and eventually this can impact the nerves and blood flow.

Attention:

This posture is often associated with the following symptoms:

Headaches and/or migraines;
Neck pain/discomfort;
Shoulder pain or pain between the shoulder blades;
Low back pain.

What can be done?

Depending on the person’s age and how long it has remained this way it is often correctable. At the very least symptoms can be managed with an appropriate amount of movement and corrective exercises. Manual therapy can be very effective at speeding up the recovery process and helping joints and muscles begin to regain their normal function in a timely manner.

In the end it comes down to changing your habits. Taking movement breaks, committing to a mobility routine, and strengthening the muscles that support your posture. See some of our videos to create your own movement routine or book a session with our clinic by clicking here.
